Litter-Robot at PetSmart: Price, Returns and What You Give Up

PetSmart sells all four current Litter-Robots. The Litter-Robot 4 lists at $699.99 there [s1], and Whisker sells it on its own site for $699 [s7]. The other three models sit within a dollar of Whisker’s prices too [s2][s8][s9].

PetSmart gives you 60 days to return the box, in sellable condition [s4]. It also pays Treats points on the purchase [s5]. Whisker gives you a 90-day in-home trial, which covers only its own websites [s10]. The warranty is Whisker’s in both cases, though a PetSmart unit needs one extra step before a claim will go through [s11].

What PetSmart sells

PetSmart’s Whisker page listed these robots on 27 October 2026, beside Whisker’s own prices on the same day:

The Litter-Robot 4 at PetSmart, item #5348052, comes in black or white. The carton holds the unit with its fence and step [s1]. A carbon filter and three drawer liners come in the box too [s1]. The product page offers store pickup and same-day delivery [s1].

PetSmart also sells a Litter-Robot 4 bundle at $799.00, item #5352222 [s3]. It adds a litter trap mat and 25 waste drawer liners [s3]. It also holds six OdorTrap packs and 30 cleaner wipes, and the warranty is the standard one year of WhiskerCare [s3]. On 27 October the bundle was ship-only, with pickup and same-day delivery marked “Not available” [s3]. PetSmart sells the mat on its own for $50 [s2].

The bundle does not include the three-year warranty extension, which Whisker prices at $129 for the Litter-Robot 4 [s11]. The Costco bundle does, and our Costco guide sets out what that carton holds.

Returns: 60 days at PetSmart, 90 at Whisker

A March 2025 thread on r/litterrobot put the question in one line: “Will buying from petsmart also give me the 90 day trial?” [s14]. It does not. Whisker’s policy covers products “purchased directly through Whisker.com, Litter-Robot.com, or Litterbox.com,” and a buyer who went through a third-party retailer “must coordinate the return directly with that retailer” [s10].

PetSmart takes returns within 60 days of purchase, with proof of purchase [s4]. A store purchase has to come back “in its original packaging or in new or sellable condition” [s4]. An online order needs both the original packaging and new or sellable condition [s4], so keep the carton. PetSmart’s policy does not say whether a litter box a cat has used counts as sellable. Ask your store before you set the robot up.

The PetSmart return is free at any store [s4]. Orders picked up in store or delivered the same day must go back to a store, and cannot be mailed [s4]. The refund method depends on how you paid. For a purchase made in a store, PayPal and other non-card payments are refunded as a merchandise return card, which cannot be turned into cash [s4]. Any Treats points the purchase earned are deducted, and points you redeemed on it are forfeited [s4].

Whisker’s trial runs 90 days from receipt and refunds the full price, less return shipping [s10]. Its prepaid FedEx label costs $60, deducted from the refund, and a unit sent back dirty can carry a $75 cleaning fee [s10].

The warranty needs one email

Every Litter-Robot carries a one-year WhiskerCare warranty [s11]. On a unit bought from Whisker, it starts when the robot ships. Whisker’s terms say “robot purchases made externally will require manual WhiskerCare Warranty activation before claims can be made” [s11].

To activate, email support@whisker.com with the PetSmart receipt attached, or click “Activate coverage” on the robot in your Whisker account dashboard [s11]. Do it the week the box arrives.

Points, codes and the $460 thread

Treats Rewards pays 10 points per dollar, and every 1,000 points is worth $2 [s5]. On 27 October the Litter-Robot 4 page estimated 6,999 points for the purchase [s1], which is about $14 toward a later order.

PetSmart runs an online code, SAVE20, from time to time. Its terms limit it to “eligible products only” on petsmart.com and the app, and say to check the product page [s6]. The Litter-Robot 4 page carried no SAVE20 marker on 27 October 2026 [s1]. The same code did work on it in January 2024, when it took the new unit to $559.99 from $699.99 [s13].

The $460 figure in a Reddit thread about PetSmart comes from a November 2023 r/litterrobot post titled “LR4 for (effectively) $460 from PetSmart” [s15]. That price stacked a 40,000-point Treats offer, which the poster valued at $100, on 20% cash back through Rakuten. The poster’s arithmetic reads “$700 - $140 (20%) - $100 (Treats) = $460” [s15]. Rakuten listed PetSmart at 2% cash back on 27 October 2026 [s16].

Where Best Buy fits

Whisker names Best Buy, with PetSmart, among the stores that carry the Litter-Robot in person [s12]. On 27 October Best Buy’s Whisker results showed the black Litter-Robot 4 at $699.00 and its Core Accessories Bundle at $799.00, both marked “Sold Out” [s17].

Best Buy has discounted the bundle through its app. On 17 December 2024 the Core Accessories Bundle was an app-only Best Buy Drop at $679, $120 off [s19].

Best Buy’s window is longer than PetSmart’s. Its policy gives litter boxes 90 days for all customers, though items must come back “in a like-new condition” [s18]. It adds that items that are “damaged, unsanitary, dented, scratched or missing major contents may be denied a return” [s18], so a box the cat has used may not qualify. The Whisker trial and the warranty activation step work the same way as at PetSmart [s10][s11].

Petco

Whisker’s retailer page names PetSmart and Best Buy and does not mention Petco [s12]. Petco’s own site returned a bot check when we tried to search it, so we could not confirm its stock either way. Whisker’s locator also lists Pet Food Express and Walmart, but not Petco [s12]. Costco is missing from it too, so the list is not complete.

Where to buy it

Buy at PetSmart if you want the robot today, or if a points offer or code applies to it. The price matches Whisker’s within a dollar, and the bare unit can be collected the same day where your store has it. The points return about 2% at the base tier. Ask the store how it treats a used box inside the 60 days, and activate the warranty the week it arrives.

Whisker’s own store is the better choice for a first automatic box, or a cat you are not sure will use one. The 90-day trial takes back a used unit for a refund, less $60 if you use Whisker’s return label [s10]. When Best Buy has stock, its 90-day litter-box window is the longest of the retailers, though a used box may not pass its like-new condition [s18].
